Baan Dam Museum

Baan Dam Museum

Let’s be real, when most travelers think of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai gets all the spotlight. Me? I went rogue. We rented a car and drove to Chiang Rai, a sleepy, artsy, mystical town with zero expectations… and left utterly spellbound.

This was my first time in Chiang Rai.

And honestly? It felt like stumbling into a secret world, one where ancient spirits, avant-garde art, and black magic architecture collide in the most mesmerizing way.

Imagine structures, some resembling tribal huts, others like gothic shrines, all painted in deep ebony, filled with animal horns, skulls, furs, and even a whole snake. It’s dark. It’s dramatic. It’s deeply spiritual. And it’s unlike anything else on Earth.

It’s not evil despite its ominous name and aesthetic, Baan Dam isn’t “dark” in a sinister way. They used black the color of the void, of potential, of the infinite to explore arts, human desire, and the cycle of life and death. Walking through, you’re not scared… you’re awakened.
